Small Industries


Introduction

On the dissolution of West Pakistan Small Industries Corporation in June, 1972, the affairs of the sub sector Small Industries in Balochistan were assigned to the Directorate of Industries while in other Provinces separate small Industries Corporation (Punjab & Sindh) or a Board in KPK were created.  The Directorate of Industries Small Industries Wing has dual functioning with regard to its official activities.  At one side it is providing skill developing training in the art traditional handicrafts and on the other hand it is striving to preserve, promote and protect the rich heritage of the province.


Official Business

  • Make surveys to determine potential for establishing training   certres.
  • Establish and run traditional craft training centers for men and women.
  • Run Small Industrial Estates.
  • Preserve, develop & promote traditional handicrafts and provide outlets for the production of cottage industry.
  • Run retail outlets to sale production from training centers and handicrafts from private individuals.
  • Organize and participate in exhibitions and fairs to promote, sale handicrafts and provide additional outlets for the sale of training centers products.
  • Provide market feedback (trends, taste, and buyer’s preference, making channels in the field of traditional handicrafts).


Objectives

  • Extension improvement of skills of the labour force concerning traditional handicrafts.
  • Improvement of craftsman prices for handicrafts products.
  • Creation of employment opportunities within the public sector.
  • Provide training to the local people in the fields of traditional handicrafts pertaining to various areas of Balochistan.
  • Plan/create employment opportunities for trained workers.
  • Eliminating the exploitation by middle man and organizing the marketing of products of the craftsman to fetch good prices for their products.
  • To preserve, protect, develop and explore local skills and training.

Training Functions

Provide skill training is the major function of Directorate of Industries (Small Industries Wing) .The training by SIW is concerned in Majority Handicrafts. In all training centers the training is given in six days each week from 8:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m. except Friday.  Majority of the courses have the period of 1 year only carpet weaving goes for 2 years. During their training the trainees receive a monthly stipend.  The objective of the stipend is to facilitate the attraction of trainees and most of the trainees come from the less privileged class, so as with an aim to provide them an incentive for meeting their personal expenses.  The amount of the stipend at present is Rs.2000/ trainee/ month.  Efforts are being made to enhance this rate to a reasonable range.
