Carpets

One of the major industrial raw materials of Balochistan is wool. In the past Balochsitan had a traditional carpet industry which was scattered in far of places and was confined only to household. As the hand knotted carpet industry provided job opportunities to the maximum number of persons and very little or no foreign exchange is involved. The Provincial Government through SIW , launched a program of carpet training all over the Province in order to provide a pool of  skilled labour for the prospective private sector. In these centers trainees are trained in hand knotting of carpet. According to their trainee level the degree of difficulty is gradually increased.

HANDICRAFTS DEVELOPMENT CENTRES

Arts and crafts in Balochistan have a long and illustrious history and have flourished in various ethno-geographical milieus. The study of stylish stitch approach and designs varies from place to place. The natives of the province with their colorful embroideries, rugs and many other are, considered to be one of the oldest among the nation and in the world .These still exist in their purest and indigenous form .The talent and potential of the handicrafts of this region is yet to be fully exposed to the outer world and appreciated for their authenticity and exuberance. One of the major objectives of the HDC is to preserve and develop the traditional handicrafts of the province. Training in HDCs is given with an aim to train women in functioning as lady demonstrator in order to make them able to apprise and improve the quality of the work of the piece wages craftsmen in the region.

LEATHER EMBROIDERY

With its exquisite craftsmanship, enchanting mystical beauty and fascinating color scheme the leather embroidery has not only bewitched the local viewers, but also earned a great admiration from the foreigners. The artisans of this art are mostly found in Turbat and Lehri. In past leather embroidery was effectuated by men. One of the objectives of the training in the art of leather embroidery is to introduce this skill among women. In the two leather embroidery training centres, the training is partly oriented to training in new skills and partly intended to train demonstrators, to apprise the quality of the work of the skilled worker (piece wage) craftsmen/women in the region.

COTTON HANDLOOM

The major handloom products of the Small Industries are woolen blankets, Tweed Cloth etc., but the most important of these is Balochi Shawl orMakrani pati as it is called in Turbat area. This is made of sheep wool and is generally used as Jackets ( Sadries ) it is made of handspun yarn of natural color. The Directorate of Industries, Small Industries is operating one Cotton Handloom Centre in Quetta city.

THE MARKETING FUNCTIONS OF (SIW).

Based on the general objectives of the (SIW) and its specific tasks related to the sale of the products, the following objectives are set for the marketing function of the (SIW).

MARKET ACCESS FOR CRAFTSMEN/WOMEN

One of the objectives is to provide access to market outlets of the craftsmen/women because for the individual craftsmen/women in remote areas the access to larger profitable outlets is much more difficult. The (SIW) through its lady demonstrator collects final products at their home or they come one of the centres which are scattered all over Balochistan and deposits the final product and collect his/her piece wages. The centres take care of the final products and transport them to Quetta, after proper finishing the products are transported to sales & display shop operated by the (SIW). The sales and display shops are primarily set up for the sales of the products of the training centre and of craftsmen/women. Presently shops are located in Quetta and Karachi

    

EXHIBITIONS, FAIRS AND FESTIVALS.

Another outlet for the various products is the periodical exhibitions held in/outside the province. Regularly (SIW) participates in exhibitions as e.g. Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Sibi, etc.
